“What is Hoop Dance?” you may ask; “You mean hula hoops?”
They are hoops, but not the children’s toys you may associate with the name. These are sturdier adult-sized hoops made with special friction tape to help them “stick” to your body. Even those who could never keep their hoop up will be amazed at the ease they can work these handcrafted hoops.
Hoop Dance is a holistic movement form that combines ecstatic dance, meditation, whirling dervish play, community ritual, and exercise. Dancing with a hoop not only massages and tones the body, but simultaneously offers a cleansing, healing practice.
This workshop will give beginners all the tools and techniques that they’ll need to get started on the hoop path and to find their own unique rhythm to dance; their “Flow”.
Bonnie Brown has been practicing the art of Hoop Dance for three years now and is excited to share this emerging art form. “There is no way you can be unhappy while you are hooping! ” says Bonnie, “It’s playful, fun, and a great work-out.”
This two hour workshop will begin with some stretches and warm-ups specific to the movements and exercises needed for Hoop Dance. There will be a series of basic moves and techniques taught for keeping the hoop up, recovery methods, dancing in your hoop, and other simple methods for moving in and out of the hoop. Participants will leave with all the basics they need to begin hooping and impress their friends with their new skills.
Bonnie also offers a regularly scheduled Hoop Dance class at Rosemary Court Yoga every Monday evening from 7:15-8:30. Visit their website, or call, (941) 952-5280 for more info about the classes. You can also find her and other hoop enthusiasts at Siesta Key Beach for a Hoop Jam every Tuesday evening from 6pm to Sunset.
Hoops are provided for everyone to use at all of these events.
This workshop will be held at PRANA YOGA, 3840 S. Osprey Ave. Sarasota, on August 14th from 12-2pm for $20.
Hoops will be provided for the workshop. There will also be hoops for sale for those interested. For questions, please contact Bonnie through the contacts link.
